Judge keeps Planned Parenthood out of Texas program

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) – A Texas judge on Friday denied a Planned Parenthood request to be allowed to offer health services to low-income women through a state program. Texas now excludes abortion providers and affiliates from the program and Planned Parenthood has been fighting to become a provider again. Judge keeps Planned Parenthood out of Texas health program

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) – A Texas judge on Friday denied a Planned Parenthood request to be allowed to offer health services to low income women under a state program. Texas decided to enforce a law already on the books that bars funding for abortion providers and affiliates, and Planned Parenthood has been fighting its exclusion. State District Judge Stephen Yelenosky said it was unlikely that Planned Parenthood would succeed at trial, though a trial may still occur. The Women’s Health Program provides family planning services and preventive health care. …

Planned Parenthood sues again over Texas health program

(Reuters) – Planned Parenthood family planning providers in Texas filed a new lawsuit on Friday over a rule that bars its clinics from a state health program for low-income women because the organization performs abortions. The suit was filed in state court, after a federal appeals court declined on Thursday to reconsider a ruling allowing Texas to withhold funding for women’s healthcare from Planned Parenthood clinics. The new lawsuit tries a different legal tactic, filing in state rather than federal court, and arguing that the way the Texas rule is written violates state law. …

Appeals court rules Texas can cut off Planned Parenthood funding

The ruling reversed a lower court ruling that had temporarily stopped Texas from cutting off funding for the women’s health organization. The decision is a blow to Planned Parenthood, which is the nation’s largest abortion provider and has been under attack from conservatives across the country who worry government funding is going to support abortions. …

PHOENIX (Reuters) – Arizona Governor Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill banning abortion providers like Planned Parenthood from receiving money through the state, her office said in a statement. WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure is feeling a pinch on donations following a controversy over its funding for Planned Parenthood, a leading provider of birth-control and abortion services. Separately, at least five of the group’s leaders have stepped down in recent weeks. …
