Dole recalls salad in 6 U.S. states for listeria risk

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – More than 1,000 bags of salad produced by Dole Foods Co have been recalled from stores in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia because of a risk of listeria. Dole announced the recall on Friday after a sample of Romaine lettuce tested positive for listeria in North Carolina. The company said in a statement that no illnesses had been reported. Dole did not immediately reply on Monday to a request for comment. In 2011, more than 30 people died from listeria-contaminated cantaloupe linked to Jensen Farms in Colorado. …

FBI probes fires at women’s clinics in Georgia

ATLANTA (Reuters) – The FBI says it is investigating “intentional” fires that erupted this week at two Atlanta-area women’s clinics, one of which performs abortions. “FBI-Atlanta is seeking information regarding intentional fires,” the agency said in a statement. It said the first of the blazes occurred on Sunday morning after someone broke out the front window of a gynecological office and set a fire inside the building. “An incendiary substance was present,” the FBI said in its statement. “Laboratory results are pending. …

Georgia bans most late-term abortions, assisted suicide

ATLANTA (Reuters) – Georgia Governor Nathan Deal signed into law two pieces of legislation on Tuesday to restrict late-term abortions and outlaw assisted suicide in the state. The first law banned most abortions after 20 weeks’ pregnancy, making Georgia the eighth U.S. state to outlaw most late-term abortions based on controversial research that a fetus can feel pain by that stage of development. Georgia already prohibits most abortions starting in the third trimester. The second law signed by Deal made it a felony to help people take their own lives. …
