France will ask EU to curb use of newer birth control pills

PARIS (Reuters) – French health authorities will ask the European Union to restrict the use of newer types of contraceptive pills over concerns they might carry health risks. France’s health minister Marisol Touraine said on Friday the newer pills, which have caught on because they reduce side effects from earlier versions such as weight gain and acne, should only be prescribed by specialist doctors to women who cannot use other types of contraception. …

LONDON (Reuters) – Shire’s hyperactivity treatment Vyvanse will be available in Europe within months after Britain’s drugs regulator backed the amphetamine-based stimulant used to treat millions of U.S. students. The drug, lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, has a slow-release action that activates the amphetamine ingredient over the course of a day, helping levels of alertness and concentration in children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). It was assessed under the European Union’s decentralized approvals procedure, led by Britain’s medicines watchdog. …

Croatia’s teachers, nurses strike against budget cuts

ZAGREB (Reuters) – Croatia’s teachers and nurses staged a one-day strike on Thursday, the first major protest against austerity measures in the country that will join the European Union next year, while Fitch affirmed Croatia’s rating but downgraded its outlook. Unions said more than 70,000 out of some 100,000 people working in schools, universities and hospitals joined the strike over reduced bonuses and wage cuts announced for 2013. …

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – Sanctions imposed on Syria by the European Union, the United States and others over its 19-month conflict are “immoral and illegal” and harming Syrian children, the government wrote in a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon released on Monday. Lot of work left on Canada-EU trade talks, says senior official

OTTAWA (Reuters) – A large amount of work remains to be done on a proposed free trade treaty between Canada and the European Union, which is supposed to be concluded by the end of the year, a senior Canadian official was quoted as saying on Friday. Novartis’s smokers’ cough treatment gets European nod

Trials showed that the treatment significantly improved lung function over the first four hours after morning dosing when compared to placebo, and that this benefit was sustained for 24 hours over a 52-week period, Novartis said. …
