Indoor tanning still common in Germany

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Four in ten Germans ages 14 to 45 say they have tried indoor tanning and one in seven are current users, according to a survey out today. Germany enacted legislation banning minors from tanning salons in 2009. Yet five percent of 14- to 17-year-olds in the survey, which was done in 2011 and 2012, said they had used indoor tanning in the past year. “It’s unfortunately not surprising, because it is still a very common practice,” said Dr. Sophie J. Balk, an attending pediatrician at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in New York, who was not involved in the work. …

Analyzing the records of more than 100 kids hospitalized with flu in New York state, researchers found those exposed to second-hand smoke were five times more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit and required a 70 percent longer stay in the hospital, compared to the kids not exposed to smoke. …

The infections prompted an investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that uncovered 22 confirmed cases, 4 probable cases, and 27 possible cases of contamination-related infections in New York, Washington, Iowa and Colorado. Products from four companies were implicated during the probe. …

Many egg-donor recruiters ignore ethical standards

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – A sizable share of the organizations recruiting egg donors online don’t adhere to ethical guidelines laid out by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), according to a new study. “I would argue that there needs to be more attention from ASRM about these agencies, because you don’t want these women exploited,” said Dr. Robert Klitzman, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University in New York and the study’s senior author. Women are recruited to donate eggs to fulfill a growing demand by couples seeking in vitro fertilization (IVF). …
