U.S. death toll rises to 24 in meningitis outbreak

Eight new cases of meningitis were reported, pushing the total nationally to 312 cases in 17 states, the CDC said. Five joint infections caused by injections also have been reported, bringing the total number of infections to 317. The number of cases has continued to mount despite the recall of the product by the New England Compounding Center. …

There were three other cases of joint infections from the steroid medication that have not resulted in meningitis cases, bringing the national total of infections to 297, according to the CDC. There were no new deaths reported, leaving the total number of fatalities at 23, the CDC said. CDC says death toll rises to 21 in U.S. meningitis outbreak

(Reuters) – The number of U.S. deaths from fungal meningitis linked to potentially contaminated steroid injections has risen to 21 with a fifth death reported in Michigan, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday. States reported 14 new cases of fungal meningitis, raising the total to 268 as the outbreak showed no signs of abating, the CDC said. There are also three peripheral infections in the outbreak caused by injections into joints, such as a knee, hip or shoulder. The outbreak stems from medications shipped by the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts. …

CDC says another 19 people diagnosed with meningitis in U.S. outbreak

The CDC said there were two additional cases of infection in joints after a steroid injection but these were not confirmed as meningitis, bringing the total of infections nationwide to 233. West Nile outbreak closer to being second worst in U.S

DALLAS (Reuters) – The outbreak of West Nile disease in the United States moved a step closer on Wednesday to becoming the second worst on record with federal health authorities reporting 280 cases of the virus-caused illness over the past week. There have now been 4,249 cases of West Nile recorded this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20 cases fewer than in 2006, the second-largest outbreak on record. The number of deaths rose by five to 168 since last week, the CDC said. …

Medication tied to rare meningitis outbreak may have reached 23 states

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) – A steroid medication linked to the death of at least five people from rare fungal meningitis may have been administered to patients in 23 states, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said on Thursday, raising fears the rare outbreak could spread. In a briefing for reporters, the CDC said five people had died so far and 35 had fallen sick from fungal meningitis in six states. The outbreak was first reported in Tennessee, where three people have died and 25 of the cases have been reported. The other confirmed deaths were in Virginia and Maryland. …

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control on Wednesday said 1,118 cases and 41 deaths have been reported so far this year, up from fewer than 700 cases and 26 deaths just one week ago. That is the highest number of West Nile virus infections reported through the third week of August since the virus was first detected in the United States in 1999, the CDC said. …
