Jesse Jackson is scheduled to speak on Sunday at a rally in Flint, Michigan, about the city’s lead-contaminated drinking water that has led to investigations, two lawsuits and multiple apologies by the state’s governor. The rally, which will be held at 1:30 p.m. local time (1830 GMT) at the Heavenly Host Church of the Harvest, comes two days before Michigan Governor Rick Snyder gives his annual speech about the state. State officials expect this month to ask lawmakers to tap Michigan’s budget surplus to cover costs related to the crisis.

Snowstorm wreaks havoc in Romania, ports closed

BUCHAREST (Reuters) – Romania closed its Black Sea ports including the main port of Constanta and shut dozens of roads due to strong winds and big snowfalls since Saturday night, authorities said on Sunday. Blizzards dumped up to half a meter of snow in 12 hours, disrupting trains and forcing authorities to shut down all schools in Bucharest and nearby counties. There were no reports of victims but emergency services said they were prepared to intervene, with about 6,000 policemen, gendarmes and firefighters currently involved in various missions across the country, the interior ministry said. …

Turkish soldier dies after clashes with Kurdish militants

Turkish police stand guard in Sur district, which is partially under curfew, in the Kurdish-dominated southeastern city of Diyarbakir, TurkeyA Turkish soldier died early on Saturday from wounds sustained during clashes with militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and seven others were injured in the fighting, the chief of the General Staff said. The soldiers had been in a firefight on Friday in the Sur district of the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, which has been under a round-the-clock curfew since early December due to persistent fighting between security forces and PKK militants. Hundreds of soldiers, thousands of insurgents and an estimated 170 civilians have died since Turkey&;s three-decade-long conflict with the PKK started again in July.
