BERLIN, Feb 7 (Reuters) – Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery will miss Saturday’s match at Nuremberg after having an operation on burst blood vessels in his buttocks. The France international had surgery on the unusual injury on Thursday and will stay in hospital until Sunday with no date for his return yet set. “I hope that he can return to training with us as soon as possible,” Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said in a club statement on Friday. Bayern, 13 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga after 19 matches, visit Arsenal in their Champions League last 16 first leg on Feb. 19. …

By Shereen Jegtvig NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – People with severe asthma who rely on prednisone are more than three times more likely to be depressed than those with severe cases who don’t use prednisone and those with mild to moderate asthma, according to a new study from The Netherlands. Prednisone-dependent asthma patients “deserve” screening for depression and anxiety, the authors say, both to alleviate their suffering and possibly improve their physical health through mental health treatment. “There’s a well-established connection with asthma, as well as chronic illness in general, and higher reports of depression than the general population,” Dr. Rebecca Hashim told Reuters Health. Prednisone is a steroid anti-inflammatory medication used to treat asthma attacks, often among people with severe symptoms.

A team of US scientists has created a pill packed with powerful antioxidants they claim could help make older adults smarter. In a University of South Florida study, the supplement, made from blueberry and green tea extracts as well as vitamin D3 and amino acids, was found to improve cognitive processing speeds and mental function in older adults.
