Judge denies stay of execution for Missouri inmate

By Kevin Murphy KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) – A federal judge on Monday denied a Missouri inmate’s motion to halt his execution after his lawyers argued he had a rare health condition that could lead to extreme pain and suffocation resulting from the lethal injection. U.S. District Court Judge Beth Phillips in Kansas City also denied inmate Russell Bucklew’s request to have his execution, set for 12:01 a.m. CDT on Wednesday, videotaped to record what his lawyers said could be evidence of his suffering. Lawyers for Bucklew, a convicted rapist and murderer, said in a news release the lethal injection would violate protections in the U.S. Constitution against cruel and unusual punishment, and they would appeal the rulings. Bucklew, 46, would be the first U.S. inmate executed since the botched April 29 execution of Oklahoma inmate Clayton Lockett, who writhed in apparent pain after what prison officials said was a ruptured vein that prevented the lethal cocktail of chemicals from being delivered properly.

FDA approves Ajinomoto’s no-calorie sweetener

(Reuters) – U.S. regulators have approved a new non-caloric sweetener from Japan’s Ajinomoto Co that can be used as a substitute for sugar or high fructose corn syrup in foods and beverages. Called advantame, the white powder is made from aspartame and vanillan and is approved as a general-purpose sweetener and flavor enhancer in food, except meat and poultry, the Food and Drug Administration said. FDA said the product can be used as a tabletop sweetener or in baked goods, non-alcoholic beverages, frozen desserts, jams and jellies, chewing gum and other foods. Advantame is the sixth so-called high-intensity sweetener FDA has approved for sale in the United States.

What do you want in a spouse? Genetic similarity may help

People tend to choose spouses who have similar DNA, according to scientists who reported on Monday the results of a study exploring the genetic resemblance of married couples. The researchers examined the genetic blueprints of 825 U.S. married couples and found a significant preference for a spouse with DNA similarities across the entire human genome. The researchers found that the preference for a genetically similar spouse was about a third as strong as the preference for a spouse with comparable education. We worked really hard in this study to not just replicate that fact,” said researcher Benjamin Domingue of the University of Colorado’s Institute of Behavioral Science, who led the study.
