FDA says 580 pets have died from jerky-caused illness

(Reuters) – The Food and Drug Administration has turned to pet owners for help in an ongoing investigation into jerky products, most made in China, that have killed nearly 600 dogs and cats. Since 2007, roughly 3,600 dogs and 10 cats have fallen ill – and more than 580 have died – from eating the sliced and dried meat products, the food inspection agency said in an update on Tuesday. …

Ohio man who posted video on drunk driving death gets 6-1/2 years

Matthew Cordle, who lives in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, Ohio, had pleaded guilty on September 18 to aggravated vehicular homicide and driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol at the time of the wrong-way highway crash that killed Vincent Canzani, 61, in June. …

Ex-Bristol-Myers executive gets one-year prison for insider trading

(Reuters) – A former Bristol-Myers Squibb Co finance executive who pleaded guilty to insider trading was sentenced on Wednesday to one year and one day in prison, federal prosecutors said. Robert Ramnarine, of East Brunswick, New Jersey, admitted in June to one count of securities fraud for trading in Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc stock options before Bristol-Myers agreed to buy the biotechnology company in June 2012 for $5.3 billion. …

Ohio conservative lawmakers sue to stop Medicaid expansion

By Mary Wisniewski (Reuters) – Six Ohio Republican lawmakers have filed a lawsuit to challenge Governor John Kasich’s plan to expand Medicaid coverage for the poor under President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform law. An Ohio legislative panel voted in favor of the expansion on Monday at Kasich’s request. Kasich, a Republican, opposes the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, but wants the $2.5 billion in federal money for his state that a Medicaid provision of the law provides. …

Gilead’s experimental drug sofosbuvir is the first of a new wave of oral therapies to be considered by the Food and Drug Administration, which has convened an advisory panel for Friday. The treatment is seen as the crown jewel of Gilead’s $11 billion purchase of biotechnology company Pharmasset and aims to replace some of the pills and injections now on the market. …
