LONDON (Reuters) – The Western world's first drug to fix faulty genes promises to transform the lives of patients with an ultra-rare disease that clogs their blood with fat. The only snag is the price. The gene therapy for lipoprotein lipase deficiency (LPLD), a hereditary disorder that raises the risk of potentially lethal inflammation of the pancreas, is likely to cost more than $1 million per patient when it goes on sale in Europe this summer. Abbott wins FDA approval for heart stent
(Reuters) – Abbott Laboratories’ Xience Xpedition heart stent was approved by U.S. health regulators and will be launched in the United States immediately, the company said on Thursday. Heart stents are tiny tubular devices that prop open diseased blood vessels after angioplasty. Abbott’s stent delivers a drug, everolimus, which helps keep the vessel from reclogging. FRANKFURT (Reuters) – German drugmaker Bayer said its cancer treatment Nexavar reached a goal of improving the survival of patients with a certain type of thyroid cancer in a late-stage clinical trial. The company said on Thursday it planned to submit data from the trial in the coming months in a bid to win regulatory approval to sell Nexavar as a treatment for radioactive iodine (RAI) refractory differentiated thyroid cancer.
