The CDC said there were two additional cases of infection in joints after a steroid injection but these were not confirmed as meningitis, bringing the total of infections nationwide to 233. U.S. meningitis outbreak claims another life with death in Virginia

(Reuters) – The U.S. meningitis outbreak linked to contaminated steroid injections has claimed another life with the death of a patient in Virginia, bringing the death toll to 16, the Virginia Department of Health said in a statement on Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the department gave no details about the victim other than that the person was from southwest Virginia. It was the second death in Virginia after an injection of steroids made by the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said earlier Tuesday that there had been 15 deaths. …

Intuitive Surgical procedure growth disappoints

(Reuters) – Intuitive Surgical Inc on Tuesday lowered its full-year forecast for procedure growth after posting a disappointing growth rate of 22 percent for surgeries using its high-priced da Vinci robots in the third quarter. Intuitive’s shares dropped more than 4 percent after it reported its third quarter results. The company said it now expects 2012 procedure growth of 24 percent, down from its prior view of 25 percent to 27 percent. Intuitive said the slower growth was due to spending constraints in Europe and a slowdown in U.S. …

Coca-Cola, Sanofi team for new line of "Beautific" drinks

(Reuters) – U.S. soft drink company Coca-Cola Co is teaming up with French drugmaker Sanofi to launch a line of drinks in France that will claim to aid health and beauty. The partnership calls for the co-development and distribution of drinks under the Oenobiol “Beautific” brand, a Coca-Cola spokesman said. “This is a small-scale pilot which is currently limited to a number of pharmacies in France,” the spokesman, Kent Landers, said. He declined to say whether the drinks could later be sold more widely. A Sanofi spokesman was not immediately available to comment. …
