NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – A sizable share of the organizations recruiting egg donors online don’t adhere to ethical guidelines laid out by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), according to a new study. “I would argue that there needs to be more attention from ASRM about these agencies, because you don’t want these women exploited,” said Dr. Robert Klitzman, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University in New York and the study’s senior author. FDA approves Talon’s Marqibo for rare leukemia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Food and Drug Administration said on Thursday it has approved Talon Therapeutics Inc’s Marqibo treatment for adults with a rare form of leukemia known as Philadelphia chromosome negative acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The drug, a targeted version of generic chemotherapy drug vincristine, will be the first commercial product for Talon. The company is majority-owned by Warburg Pincus and Deerfield Management, but shares accounting for a minority portion of its equity trade over-the-counter and were down 5 percent in afternoon trading. …

Only one gonorrhea drug left for routine cases: CDC

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Health officials are urging doctors to stop using a key antibiotic to treat routine cases of gonorrhea due to signs of bacterial resistance, leaving one treatment left for the sexually transmitted disease. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday it no longer recommends the use of cefixime, marketed under the brand name Suprax by Lupin Ltd, because it is becoming less effective. That leaves the injectable generic antibiotic ceftriaxone, used in combination with another antibiotic, as the last treatment option. …

Study finds slowing drop in youth tobacco use

From 2009 to 2011, the percentage of high school students using tobacco dropped only slightly, to 23.2 percent from 23.9 percent, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said. The decline was greater among middle school students, dropping to 7.1 percent from 8.2 percent, the CDC said. …

Red Cross says delivers food, medical aid to Aleppo

GENEVA (Reuters) – The Red Cross delivered vital food and medical supplies to Aleppo on Thursday, the first time one of its aid convoys managed to enter Syria’s second city since fighting intensified a few weeks ago, a spokesman said. A convoy of trucks brought one month’s food supplies for 12,500 people and wound-dressing material for up to 1,000 injured, depending on the severity of their wounds, the International Committee of the Red Cross said in a statement. “Despite the difficult security conditions, the convoy managed to get inside the city,” ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan told Reuters. …
