Most Americans still not getting enough exercise – U.S. study

ATLANTA (Reuters) – More American adults are walking regularly but less than half of them exercise enough to improve their health, according to a federal study released on Tuesday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, based on a telephone survey from 2010, found that 62 percent of adults walk 10 minutes or more a week, up from 55.7 percent in 2005. However, only 48 percent of adults exercise enough to improve their health, which was up from 42.1 percent in 2005, the CDC said. …

U.S. hospital companies seen under microscope as costs targeted

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Investors in U.S. hospital companies can expect more scrutiny of billing practices and the medical need for expensive treatments as the federal government faces greater pressure to recoup billions in fraudulent claims, analysts said. HCA Holdings Inc, the largest for-profit hospital operator in the United States, said earlier this week that federal authorities were investigating whether heart procedures performed at some of its facilities were medically necessary. Drugmaker Medivation posts loss as expenses jump

(Reuters) – Drugmaker Medivation Inc returned to recording a quarterly loss after a rare first-quarter profit as expenses rose, sending its shares down 3 percent after market. April-June net loss narrowed to $5.5 million, or 15 cents per share, from $9.5 million, or 27 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue, which Medivation generates mostly through collaborations with Astellas Pharma Inc, more than doubled to $42.9 million, boosted by $35.6 million of deferred revenue from ending a drug development deal with Pfizer Inc. …

Behavior therapy dampens Tourette tics

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Behavior therapy can help some people with Tourette syndrome stifle their embarrassing and sometimes inappropriate tics, according to a new study of adults with the neurologic condition. “It really gives patients a wonderful alternative to medications,” said Sabine Wilhelm, who directs the OCD and Related Disorders Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and led the study. “It is something that has created a lot of excitement in the field,” she added, “because now we can finally treat neurological disorders with psychological interventions. …
