LabCorp to buy Covance for $6.1 billion

(Reuters) – Laboratory Corp of America Holdings, a major provider of healthcare diagnostic services, said it would buy Covance Inc for about $6.1 billion in cash and stock to expand into the contract clinical trial business. Covance’s drug development outsourcing services help pharmaceutical companies cut costs by eliminating the need to maintain in-house laboratories. Covance shareholders will receive $75.76 in cash and 0.2686 LabCorp shares for each share held. The offer of $105.12 per share represents a premium of 32 percent to Covance’s closing price on Friday. …

China to quarantine Ebola doctors returning from West Africa

Chinese factory workers make protective suits for use in handling people infected with the Ebola virus, in Anqiu, south of Beijing, on October 24, 2014China will quarantine medical staff who work with Ebola patients in West Africa for 21 days after they return from duty, a senior health official said Monday. Doctors returning to China will be subjected to a battery of tests before they enter the observation period, said He Qinghua, deputy director of the Ministry of Health's Bureau for Disease Control and Prevention. "As these doctors are responsible for the testing of the virus, on their return to China they will be put under a 21 day quarantine period to be supervised by local community service centres," He said at a press briefing. Any Chinese medical staff who developed symptoms would be immediately sent to a designated hospital, he added.
